What are trip and fuel permits?
Trip and fuel permits let a commercial truck run legally through a province or state where it isn’t registered under the International Registration Plan (IRP) or licensed under the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA).
The trip permit is temporary registration, standing in for apportioned plates. The fuel permit is a temporary fuel tax permit, standing in for the IFTA licence and decals. Each one covers a single trip for a set number of days.
Carriers use them for one-off loads, new trucks waiting for plates, seasonal work, or routes outside their usual lanes.

You need one for a province or state where your truck has no IRP registration or IFTA licence, if the power unit has 3 or more axles, or has 2 axles and weighs more than 11,797 kg (26,000 lb), or runs in a combination over that weight.
A trip permit is temporary registration that replaces IRP plates for that jurisdiction. A fuel permit covers fuel tax in place of an IFTA licence. Many provinces and states need both, so we usually file them together.
It is valid for one trip within a set time window, usually between 48 hours and 10 days depending on the province or state. The exact dates are printed on your permit.
Usually no. A permit covers a single trip. If you leave a province and come back later, you normally need a new permit for the return. Tell us your full round trip and we'll quote it in one go.
